Tartalove

The project

For a few years now, the Island of Elba and the entire Tuscan Archipelago have been hosting the miraculous summer hatching of sea turtle eggs, an event that is popular with all sea lovers and demonstrates the importance of maintaining and preserving the beauty of our natural world.

We have chosen to work alongside Legambiente and its Tartalove initiative, a project for the protection of sea turtles that includes recovery and care activities, controlling nesting areas, nest monitoring, information and awareness-raising for fishermen, tourists and local populations.

Acqua dell'Elba's support for Tartalove is being renewed for 2024 with two actions. One “in the field”, with the start of the “Tartabeachtour” on the island of Elba: 15 events in the area to increase understanding of sea turtles; the other, to provide economic support, with the sale of an Acqua dell'Elba room diffuser customised with the Tartalove logo, available from 16 June 2024.

ELBA, THE SEA TURTLE OF THE ACQUA DELL'ELBA COMMUNITY

The commitment of Acqua dell'Elba and its community to Tartalove is not new. A few years ago, as a result of a similar initiative, we managed to save “Elba”, the sea turtle named by our community, which had been recovered in a serious condition off the coast of the Adriatic Sea.

Thanks to our support, Elba was cared for in the sea turtle recovery centre in Manfredonia, which had been refurbished also thanks to funds raised through our initiative (read the Legambiente press release here), and released into the sea not far from the centre a few weeks later. Relive the event with our video!

TO LEARN MORE

Tartalove is the Legambiente campaign to protect the loggerhead species of sea turtle.

At least 130,000 sea turtles are endangered every year in the Mediterranean Sea. And at least 40,000 die as a result of being caught accidentally, ingesting rubbish and from trauma caused by boat traffic.

During the nesting period, generally between June and August, the females come out of the sea and laboriously climb the shore to lay their eggs. In a hole dug in the sand that is about one-metre deep, they deposit about 100 eggs the size of pingpong balls. Incubation is guaranteed by the sand and the heat of the sun.

Hatching occurs after a period of 45 to 60 days, when the baby turtles leave the sand nest to return to the sea. When you consider that, out of every 1000 turtles born, only one makes it to reproductive age, you realise how far we still have to go to adequately protect these animals.
